Anti-friction treatment: what it is and what it is used for

Anti-friction treatment is one of the most requested processes for the treatment of metals in general. This is because it allows you to effectively solve any problem of friction, wear, seizure and dry lubrication.

Precisely because of the importance of this treatment, Nicasil has developed an exclusive Anti-friction Process which involves the application of a layer of nickel sealed with an additive which makes it more resistant to corrosion, guaranteeing the same surface hardness while decreasing friction. But let’s take a closer look at what anti-friction treatment is and what it is used for.

WHAT IS THE ANTI-FRICTION TREATMENT

In general, the intrinsic characteristics of the anti-friction treatment can be divided into two aspects:

  1. A layer of nickel obtained through the Nicasil Process has a surface hardness of 500-550 HV100. Once hardened with heat treatment (10h at 300°C) it can reach 1000 HV100. Considering the roughness always constant (e.g. Ra 0.8), the friction coefficient of nickel is approximately 0.4 for the raw product.
  2. Through the anti-friction treatment, with the addition of the anti-friction sealant, the value of the coefficient decreases until it reaches values of 0.1-0.2. Anti-corrosion treatment is of fundamental importance for all those metals in contact with aggressive agents.

The “Nicasil anti-friction” treatment also acts on corrosion resistance which increases by 20% more than standard nickel plating.

 

WHY CHOOSE THE NICASIL ANTI-FRICTION TREATMENT

The advantages that Nicasil anti-friction treatment offers are numerous. Thanks to the non-stick properties of the polymers it is possible, in fact, to apply the anti-friction treatment to ensure better sliding of the metal surfaces. Not only.

The presence of solid lubricants, as in this case, gives the surface self-lubricating properties. Nicasil anti-friction is the perfect treatment for production lines, because it facilitates the flow of materials, reduces friction and the consequent use of energy. Furthermore, it guarantees greater resistance over time and protects all mechanical parts from corrosion.

 

THE INNOVATION OF ANTI-FRICTION NICASIL

Nicasil’s anti-friction treatment, unlike traditional coatings, covers the surface of the pieces, impregnating them and eliminating the risk of detachment and flaking of treatment itself. In fact, through a series of thermal, chemical and mechanical processes, the microporosity and roughness of the base material are amplified.

In this way the fluoropolymers used are allowed to penetrate the substrate, also eliminating the risks of detachment and treatment flaking. The Nicasil anti-friction treatment can be used on a wide range of metals, except copper which requires preliminary testing before proceeding.
